Fast-forward to Hawaii. The day before the ride, we did a snorkeling trip to Molokini crater; looking back from Molokini we got a great view of Haleakala. Perhaps it doesn't look so impressive, but when you're on the island, the crater has an unmistakeable presence; the crater basically makes up the entire eastern half of the island, and when you're driving around that area it just looms over everything.
